5 out of 5 stars Informative and Good Price   May 21, 2010

When I decided to try my hand at knitting my boyfriend's mother took a few books out of the library for me to look at. This book was one of them. By the time the return date was due, I knew I wanted to keep it so I went on Amazon and ordered it. This book had great instructions and patterns that I would want to knit. (the other books that she took out for me looked like the patterns came out of the 80's) This book had stuff for people in their 30's and below. Most likely not all patterns will suit your taste. But let me tell you for the price of the book, even if you only love a few it's well worth it. The writting is great and informative and kicked me into knitting obsession. This isn't just an instruction manual for the actual knitting, its for the whole process. Starting out I had no idea about yarn weights, fiber options, knitting websites or how to find knitting groups. There were some mistakes in the first publishing that you need errata to fix, and you can find online on the author's website but this seems to be VERY common in knitting books (with patterns that say k1, p1, k2to I'm sure it is hard to check but these mistakes were fixed and after checking my book already had the corrections. I loved her book so much I bought, Stitch 'N Bitch Nation and Happy Hooker. I would definately recommend this book to someone looking to learn and some people just looking for more patterns for their collection. There are patterns for scarves, shirts, sweaters, a cat bed, a dog sweater, bikini, backpack, cell case, just to name a few with two sewing projects for you organization needs (a needle case, and a circular needle organizer)

4 out of 5 stars Knitter's Guide   April 16, 2010

I first bought Debbie Stoller's crochet book "Happy Hookers" and loved the way Debbie wrote and taught. It was so easy to learn from her. It was no different when knitting from Debbie Stoller's book. Though some of the projects in this book seemed out of date or not my style, I enjoyed reading this book and learning from it. I still carry it around with me while I knit in case I get stuck along the way. She is very helpful. Using this book paired with internet research of knitting, I am a very confident knitter now!

5 out of 5 stars Must-Have Reference   March 29, 2010

This is a wonderful resource for any knitter whether he or she is just learning or has a lot of experience. Projects are creative. Instructions are very very clear. Tips are wonderful. Extra information is great! I highly recommend this book. It is a classic and a must for any knitter's reference library!

5 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners!!   March 15, 2010

I was told by a friend that if I want to learn to knit I should get this book. She was right. I started a project the day I received the book. I like the patterns, they appeal to younger knitters. I am 35 but still love the patterns. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn how to knit. It doesn't feel like an instruction manual. I like that she includes more than one way to achieve certain techniques. Great Choice for beginners!

3 out of 5 stars Beginners book   March 8, 2010

I got this book along with a skein of yarn and a pair of US8 needles. I had no idea how to knit. I'm gonna be honest, I am not a book learner when it comes to practical handmade stuff, so most of my knitting learning was through a lot of very useful videos on youtube. However, I found this book a pretty good reference every time I needed to check on something that was not uploaded as a video or the video quality was poor. With this book I learned how to do intarsia and learned how to fix mistakes among other things.

Now, this is FAR from being a knitter's handbook. It's a good starter, but once you learn the basics, you can pass it along to somebody who needs how to learn and get yourself something more advanced or a stitch dictionary.

The pros:
- Easy to read and very clear instructions for most directions.
- Teaches all you need to learn as a BEGINNER.

The cons:
- The patterns are outdated or silly. But maybe because once you learn all the amazing things you can knit, the beginners knits are no longer attractive.
- Agree with other reviewers on the fact that sometimes it goes in too much into talking about something else before hitting the point. Not a big deal if you just skip paragraphs.

The polemic:

- Some sexual references and some words not suitable for the conservative or the child. But you know that from the tittle, so if you are either a child or a too conservative buyer, it comes obvious that this is not your book. I never understood why people buy this to later post a bad review talking about the tone and language managed by the author.

- The infamous garter stitch scarf. This pattern seem to be an issue for most bad reviewers here. But hey! it's very obvious that this is a BEGINNERS book. Is it not a garter stitch scarf the very first thing you learn on knitting? If we assume that "we all know how to knit a garter stitch scarf" why bother in even writing a book teaching how to knit and purl at all?... So, if you know how to knit and need a more advanced reference: PASS THIS BOOK. So the rest of us can skip the complains about how basic a book is when it is the buyer's responsibility to have a better criteria when choosing books appropriate for one's skill level and goals.

- The snobism that can be felt in the air while reading some of the passages that are not technique specific but just anecdotic. Yeah, I feel the same snobbism in the editorials of most knitting magazines and while in the specialty yarn store. It comes with the craft for some people.

One last thing: this book is really aimed for the teenager audience. More mature readers will probably find this outrageous others find it amusing and others... simply don't care. You make your choice.
