Product Description
Forensic artist Fiona Glass is the best in the business -- which is precisely why she's quitting. Her skill at mining victims' memories to re-create the faces of sadistic criminals has left her haunted and wary, and only Jack Bowman's dogged persistence convinces her to help him. The rugged police chief is hunting a serial killer who's targeting teenage girls. But what seems like a simple assignment is fraught with complications, including a searing attraction to Jack that's tempting Fiona to let her guard down in potentially dangerous ways.

Jack never intended for Fiona to become so deeply involved in the case -- or in his life. But every instinct tells him she's his best hope for finding a psychopath who's lurking in plain sight, growing more ruthless with each passing day. And now that Fiona is right in the killer's crosshairs, the only way to keep her safe is to unravel a small town's darkest secrets, one terrifying thread at a time....

4 out of 5 stars Good and unusual romantic thriller   July 4, 2010
Hooked on Sook (Minneapolis, USA)
This is a good book. The characters are interesting and the story is well thought out and paced. The writing is smooth and fairly fast-paced without getting bogged down in too much description (there's no overwriting, which is great.)

Pros: I liked that the romantic element was pretty unpredictable. I actually didn't want the hero Jack and heroine Fiona to get together for most of the book because I thought Jack was a liar who was still in love with his ex-girlfriend Lucy and Fiona could do better. But the author changed my mind by the end. Loved the first sex scene, I've never read an actual "failure" between the sheets in a romance before and this was really refreshing. Liked the ending in the Loft, the hero showing rather than telling.

Nit picky cons: adding one POV scene from Courtney and from Nathan in the last 70 or so pages of the book was jarring. ***spoilers ahead*** Didn't buy that Fiona would give up her art show to chase a kid down when she could have chased him down the next morning or called Santos to get the kid. Didn't think she would be so imprudent as to go to the house when the hostage team was minutes away. Kidnapping the heroine was pretty clichéd actually. Still a very good book. Recommended. I'd give it 4.5 stars if there were half stars.

4 out of 5 stars Fast paced and entertaining   January 15, 2010
A Book a Day (New England)
I have to say I really like this writer. This was the first book I've read by her and certainly not the last. One of my pet peeves is when a writer dedicates chapters and chapters on what secondary and villainous characters are doing. I get bored and find myself skimming pages until we return to the main characters. Laura Griffin does NOT do that. She is able to quickly flip back and forth in a manner of a page or two to convey what is going on elsewhere and quickly returns focus to what's happening with our lead character. This book was well paced and kept twists and turns in it to keep you engaged. It's also difficult to determine the whodoneit since you're barely introduced to the character. The female lead was strong, caring, and compassionate, someone you could relate to. I did not see her as shallow, as someone else mentioned, but rather haunted and burned out with very good reasons for it. The male lead Jack was a take charge personality if not slightly arrogant, but overall lacking in what I would look for in a strong male lead. This book could have been a five, but there was something missing in the development of Fiona and Jack, probably all the lies that Jack was throwing at Fiona. There weren't enough scenes together where I felt real chemistry between them only because I would base this on trust and commitment, but Jack kills the trust by tossing lies and skepticism at Fiona and seems more committed to his job than to Fiona. Although there are sensuous scenes, they're very light and fluffy and no where near descriptive enough to convey an intense connection to one another. It's like it could be anyone having sex, but not a portrayal of two people deeply connected to one another making love or even having incredibly hot sex that bonds a couple together during a crisis. Spoiler: After their first time, Jack immediately gets a call from his ex because she's scared someone was trying to get to her and he lies to Fiona telling her he's gotta go into the office to work with his buddy. When he leaves her alone in bed, the true present danger is that she was left alone, but she handles the situation and then catches him in the lie when she calls the police and finds that his buddy is not with him. Through it all, the writing is still excellent and there is a funny moment where Jack does say something like, I won't lie to you..... again, that is I won't lie to you again. It's a good read, I'll read more by the author, but she needs more development romantically.

5 out of 5 stars You will not be disappointed   October 4, 2009

Laura Griffin's books are always full or originality - the characters, the plotlines, the twists and turns, the settings.

Fiona Glass is an artist who is trying to break free of her obligations to the police and the FBI. She is tired of all the ugliness and pain the work brings her. But a police officer needs help with tracking down a rapist and murderer he has a personal vendetta against, and once again Fiona feels compelled to help out.

I am always amazed by how real Griffin's characters seem. They have their own quirks, their own problems. Every time I pick up one of her books I know I'm guaranteed to be surprised, and I know I'm going to have a late night or two trying to get to the end as fast as I can. Thread of Fear is Laura Griffin in her element. This is the kind of book anybody can enjoy - it takes things from so many genres.

2 out of 5 stars Couldn't finish it   August 13, 2009
M. Hughes (Winnebago, IL USA)

My first and probably last Laura Griffin novel. What the other reviewers don't mention is that Fiona Glass is a shallow, self centered individual who resents her role as forensic artist although she's happy enough with the money it provides. She is a woman with a natural talent for communicating with witnesses and drawing accurate sketches of murders and rapists. Unfortunately this isn't what Fiona wants to do. She has stars in her eyes. She sees herself as an artist living a life of gallery shows, having cocktails with famous artists and enjoying the acclaim of adoring fans.

Wouldn't you like to think, in her circumstances, you would be happy to help law enforcement capture monsters; help bring closure to suffering families; help bring children back home? Fiona has to be coerced time and again into doing the right thing. I couldn't bring myself to like or respect her. Almost 150-pages into the constant whine about her reluctance to help the police, I was sickened enough to toss the book in the Goodwill bag.

There are a lot of novels written about caring people. Brave people; people who make sacrifices to do the right thing; people who really want to help and make a difference in the lives of others. Life is short, why waste it reading about people who are so much less than the best.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible! I can't wait to read more from this author. Mystery, suspense, action, and romance at it's best.   August 8, 2009
Alyce In Wonderland (Over the hill or underland, or just behind a tree)

This is the first book I've read by Laura Griffin. I just finished the last page and can't wait to order more of her work. Not a single page of this book was wasted. It is packed with lifelike characters, breath- catching suspense, steamy love scenes, and a steadily building romance. Everything comes to an adrenaline pumping peak as the mystery unfolds. This book is excellent. As picky as I tend to be about romantic suspense novels, "Thread of Fear" kept me thoroughly rapt.

After finishing "Thread of Fear", read the sequel. It's just as good!
