Bland. Not Essential July 9, 2010 DCW (USA) Some obvious info; some sharing of wisdom; some misleading info. If your teacher doesn't know way more than this then you are apprenticing with the wrong person. If you are using this to learn to tattoo then you are in the wrong business.

the book was full of great info for a beggining artist like myself it helped me fine tune my machines to achive the best penetration for my taste. I do however dissagree on the statement where he said not to use grape fruit to practice... I use pumpkins, gords, water melons and things like this to warm up, yes its true its nothing like skin but it's a good warm up getting used to the feel of the machine its self before putting it to skin unknowinly of how it will feel to you is a bad idea if you ask me. It's a great boost of muscle memory when you havent done a tottoo in a while and you willget to warm up with some straight lines and stuff like that
Extremely helpful Beginners Tattoo Guide October 7, 2009 R. W. Huff (West Central Indiana) Being new to tattooing I found it difficult to get any help or tips on tattooing. This book is full of helpful tips for beginners. The tips were in depth and easy to understand. I learned a lot from this book that was vital to not making big mistakes. There are tips on the tattoo machine, ink, stencils, care for new tats, and how to get into the trade professionaly. The author doesn't talk down to the reader. It's almost as if he is beside you as you are setting up, beginning a new tat, then tearing down and cleaning up. Well worth the price. I hope there's a second book somewhere down the road!
VERY HELPFUL!!! June 29, 2009 a tattooer (USA) I found this book to be very useful. I has a lot of information that I use on a daily basis working as a full time tattooer. It has broadened my knowledge on tattooing and did so in an entertaining way.

this is an ok reference material, provided that you already know a little bit about tattooing and work under someone's supervision. it has a lot of the same material as Alayon's other book (that i have also owned) - "Secrets of Tattooing". basically, the author "talks a lot of game but can't back it up". it all pretty much boils down to a bunch of long chapters of the author talking about how he's gonna tell you everything and teach you everything he knows but doesn't give any practical tips, then a bunch of jokes and author's personal memories, and then just a little bit of how-tos which are, don't get me wrong, helpful but might be a little hard to understand if you're a newbie. it has information on the machines, too, but again, it might be a little tough if you're new to the game.
the language leaves much to be desired as well. the book didn't appear too well-planned or thought out, more like a verbal sketchbook with random ideas that were put together in an attempt to make a "book" but they still read as someone's apprentice's notebook.
summing it all up, it's an ok read but don't expect to learn the promised "art and science of modern tattooing".
