3 out of 5 stars for beginer/intermediate   May 16, 2010

This book has about half basic information that anyone who draws already knows and half ideas to refine your drawings or explore new ideas. It can be very useful if used as an inspiring guide for your development.

4 out of 5 stars A Great help to concept   May 12, 2010
Leonardo B. Ferreira (Sao Paulo, SP Brazil)
Hi! I'm from Brazil, 24 years old, and I must say this book will help me a lot to create all the characters that I needed to create, with a proper background, and a lot of new ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent artist, excellent book   February 1, 2010

The book gives numerous examples, and explains the way the artist thinks about each figure, why the figure fits into the category of fantasy figures he creates. He also discusses the importance of research, the proper proportions, even the figures' stance and facial expressions that might be used with each figure.

For the beginner, it's a great way to "learn the ropes" of character creation. For the pro, it's a source of factual material that may get you thinking in different directions.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference   January 12, 2010

This obviously won't teach you everything you need to know to paint or draw fantasy figures, but most of the 100 tips are great reminders to refer to whenever attempting to put together a composition. I found it a great complement to my existing library of reference material.

5 out of 5 stars This is an idea book, not a technique book   April 9, 2009

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RMYPK3M2E2IZE First of all, let me say that this book brings back memories of me playing Magic The Gathering cards. A lot of the illustrations in the book are from Wizards of the Coast. Francis Tsai is a concept artist and you can find his work on [...].

This book is not really on art techniques, there are no step-by-step tutorials to follow along. It's one that gives ideas to think about when trying to come up with a character.

That being said, the writeup for the book is pretty good. It gives a lot of ideas on things that can be changed or added to enhance the characters. It can be on costume design, colour combination, using silhouettes, thinking like the character itself, etc. All come with nice illustrated paintings as examples.

This book is more of a resource book that's great when brainstorming for ideas.

If you're looking for techniques, check out ImagineFX's book called Fantasy Workshop: Mastering Digital Painting Techniques.
