Insightful, could be better organized May 17, 2010 Fortune R. Elkins (brooklyn, ny United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'd heard vaguely of Paula over the years in women's magazines but had never read any of her books. I had the general impression that she was a crusader for truth in beauty advertising. This February I asked an acquaintance of mine what cleanser she used with her Clarisonic face brush because her skin looked great. She told me she used Paula's products. I didn't know Paula had a line of products or books at all! My acquaintance urged me to read this book, saying it had completely changed her beauty outlook.
I purchased the Kindle edition for my Mac, which was easy and pleasant to read on the screen. However I will echo others' calls for an index.
Paula's tone is chatty, but also no-nonsense, like a stern aunt. She relies mostly on peer-reviewed research whenever possible, and tries to explain such research in simple English. Maybe sometimes she simplifies things too much, but overall it's a pretty good approach geared to everywoman. She will recommend other companies' products besides her own, but of course she does mention her own frequently.
Altho' I thought myself a canny beauty consumer, Paula did surprise me a few times, and I confess I learned some important things. For many years I had used witch hazel as a toner to stop my sensitive skin from itching. She explained that witch hazel is actually also an irritant, but stops itching by causing a slight distractive itching that fools the nerves. She argued that the witch hazel was only continuing the irritation in the long run.
It was hard to give up my witch hazel, but I confess that after 3 weeks, much of redness did go away for the first time in many years. Also, I love the scent of lavender, but Paula pointed me to peer-reviewed research showing that in the test tube, lavender oil had actually been proven to kill skin cells, thus harming the natural skin barrier and causing senstivity. I was shocked, but did use the internet to find the study and was convinced.
Now I've stopped using lavender products, and again, I have to confess that after 6 weeks without any lavender products, my skin does seem less sensitive. I do wish however she spent more time on rosacea and couperose, though.
Not that I would say Paula's perfect. Her makeup advice and approach seems stuck in the early 1990s "matte & nude" period. Also her section on lasers, cosmetic fillers and Botox could be more in-depth and up-to-date. She doesn't go into enough detail on these, and doesn't mention all the downsides. She is honest and admits that she had some small complications with her own filler experience, however.
Also, she doesn't always take allergans and hormone-disrupters seriously enough. In many of her evaluations, she will say that a certain ingredient is regulated and certain products meet government standards. But of course there are legitimate questions as to whether the government standards are strict enough in light of recent science and if even these minimal regulations are adequately enforced. So sometimes I wish she were more skeptical on these points.
However I will say I was impressed enough with this book to sample Paula's products and to stop using lavender, witch hazel, and any alcohol. Her advice has really improved my skin, and her products are better than the "fancy" products than I was using - I must confess. Her advice is good for people with sensitive skin and I have to admit her products have helped mine at a cost much less than I used to pay.
Fantastic book! My wife loves it. May 14, 2010 Malia Sebastian This is Scott's wife. I love this book. It has so much information in it and it makes a lot of sense. For biology/science people she uses the correct words for chemicals and such. For non-biology/science people (I lean more towards the non-science reading myself) it still makes sense. And it is useful to have those big words because you can take it to your products and look in the ingredients and know what you are looking for, if something is good or bad based on those crazy words. I can't even begin to do this book justice on how useful it is. You'll look at beauty products much differently and much more intelligently after this book.
The book beauty companies don't want you to read! April 29, 2010 The Cheap Diva 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Original Beauty Bible by Paula Begoun cuts through the confusing hype and misinformation surrounding cosmetics and beauty products and treatments so consumers can spend smarter, and treat their skin better. Paula Begoun, who has experience both as a makeup artist and aesthetician, is uncompromising in her criticism for the cosmetics and beauty business. One point Begoun makes clear is that the popularity of many cosmetics and skin care products is not based on successful product performance, but on successful marketing strategies that often include misleading claims.
Throughout the exhaustively researched The Original Beauty Bible she dispels common myths such as which beauty ingredients are bad for you or which ingredients sound good but don't deliver. This comprehensive book covers everything from which cosmetic and skin care ingredients are the most effective, ineffective or just plain irritating. The author offers practical advice on several skin care topics including the importance of exfoliating, solutions for acne, dry skin, rosacea, hair removal and more. Because there is no such thing as a face lift in a jar, Begoun devotes a section to medical cosmetic procedures, discussing both the risks and rewards of different procedures.
Unlike other beauty books, The Original Beauty Bible doesn't have any eye candy, such as glossy pictures of lovely models, to break up all the text. Reading this book is a lot like reading a reference manual. The fun aspect of cosmetics, being creative and looking pretty, comes into play at the end where Begoun talks about choosing flattering makeup colors and appropriate application techniques. If you want to hype and entertainment buy a fashion magazine. If you want no nonsense credible advice that's going to save you both time and money, buy The Original Beauty Bible (third edition).

Essential Reading for Every Woman April 27, 2010 Ms Margaret What a lifesaver! Friends kept loaning me books on (expensive, nonsensical) organic beauty care and "pro" make-up application - all of which made claims I found pretty dubious. "The Original Beauty Bible" cuts through the BS and tells you what works and what doesn't. Paired with Paula Begoun's online Beautypedia (which has tons of great reviews, information, and instructional videos), this is an invaluable resource. My only complaint is this book's lack of an index. Yes, the table of contents is really detailed, but an index (so you could quickly flip to "skin tone - determining your" or "chapped lips") should have been a no-brainer. Still, a must-have book that will keep you from repeatedly wasting money at the drugstore looking for that miracle product to make you beautiful.
Skin Care by Paula Begoun April 16, 2010 Trust Yourself (Collegeville, PA USA) After being amazed with what I saw Paula Begoun reveal on Oprah, I purchased this book for her indepth reports on varying aspects of beauty from cosmetic products to cosmetic surgery and have been extremely pleased with her suggestions that have worked tremendously for me. Would highly recommend it.
