Product Description
At the age of ten, Don Ed Hardy recognized the unique force of tattoo art. Growing up in the center of 1950s and early 60s California pop culture, he went on to earn an art school degree and then learned to tattoo by apprenticing himself to master artists. Over the past forty years Hardy has revolutionized this ancient tradition while also bringing fresh energy to the classical mediums of painting, printmaking and ceramics through his exhibitions in galleries and museums across the United States and abroad.

5 out of 5 stars The Ed Hardy you haven't seen before   July 6, 2010
N. Williams (USA)
Though Ed Hardy is best known as one of America's most influential tattoo artists, since the 1960s, he has been quietly shaping design trends in myriad mediums around the world. This book is a testament to the breadth and power of his images. Thoughtfully curated and beautifully printed, this is a must for tattoo aficionados, street artists, graphic designers, and anyone reaching to put a finger on the pulse.

3 out of 5 stars Text is 1/2 in German!   February 7, 2010

I LOVE Ed Hardy's flare and learning about classical American tattooists, but I was very disappointed in:

A) How too few examples of his work was in the book.

B) How short the text was.

C) How HALF of the text was not in English.

1 out of 5 stars ed hardy art is not original   January 13, 2010

anyone who knows anything about tattoo art will NOT appreciate this book. ed hardy "art" is not original. he basically copied his style off of japanese hori masters and chinese tattoo artists such as pinky yoon. ed hardy's tattooing technique is terrible and so is his so-called "original art."

if you want REAL art, go check out artists such as Paul Booth, Shige, Horiyoshi, and Jeff Gogue. This book is a joke.

5 out of 5 stars interesting, hip, colorful art from tattoo artist to fine artist   September 24, 2009

As an artist myself, I've appreciated Don Ed Hardy's designs whether I see them on clothing or as a tattoo themselves. He has an excellent grasp of design and drawing and making subjects visually interesting...including traditional tatttoo "subjects".

Hardy's designs have recently exploded on the fashion scene because of this and now can be seen on everything from spiral notebooks to keyrings to his more-oft-seen shirts and jeans.

However, this book takes the reader back to what made Hardy well known...not the name brand or the commercial marketing but the artist behind it all.

There is little text in the book but an abundance of pictures...most of them in color... which makes it a pleasure to flip through. He's known for his dragon paintings, and flowers and those stand out throughout the book along with other traditional tattoo subjects he's taken to fine art.

However, the photo of the book cover on this product page is a tad deceiving as it makes it appear as though this is an uber thick coffee table book of endless photos and, while the book is filled with them, it's not a thick book as it's drawn on the home page. It's just 143 pages.

Still, that said, whether tattoo lover or fine artist, there is much to visually appreciate in Hardy's book.

I love this book. It has all of the retro-tattoos in it. Great pictures. Lot's of pictures. I'm really impressed.
