Product Description
An immense, opulently illustrated volume about the high art of tattooing in Japan. The art of creating long-lasting body decorations has an age-old tradition in Japan. Many parallels can be drawn between this traditional genre and classical ink paintings and woodcuts by Japanese masters. This book contains works by many of the finest and most prestigious master tattooists, in a spectrum ranging from old school to neo-traditional and contemporary styles. These virtuosos provide inspiration and serve as role models for a younger generation of tattoo artists in their Asian homeland and abroad. Included are rare and beautifully documented works by traditional masters with their delicate and impressive full body suit tattoos, the style of which has changed very little since the Edo Period, when this art form first became popular. The art works are splendidly depicted in intimate photojournalism, where they provide silent testimony to months spent under the needles of these unparalleled masters. The volume's generously large format provides ample space for impressive photographs which artfully capture the diversity and lively creativity of Japan's contemporary tattoo scene. Not solely for fans of tattoos, it's equally appealing for people who are interested in Japanese culture and art, and will delight graphic artists, fashion designers and visual artists. Huge, hardcover, color. Text in English & German.

3 out of 5 stars Art work from Japan   July 8, 2009

This is a pretty large book of quality cropped and digitally enhanced photos of tattooing in Japan. There is a lot of recent stuff emerging , e.g. American styles, and more Japanese machine art-work. The first few pages have the best art-work in my opinion, of the legacy of Horitoku. If you don't know who that is, you don't know much about Tebori. I was dissapointed this book only has a few on his art work and more on Horiyoshi who really does not do Tebori anymore and is more westernized. This book has a good number of Japanese art, but if your looking for hand work its hard to see many. The prints are good, some are copies of old prints. The girl who compiled the book is younger, more modern, so the book focuses more on the newer artwork in Japan. But it still gives a few good pieces of Tebori, which are worth the cost of the book, because you are not going to find those, even if you go to Japan. Tebori is so difficult to find, authentic pieces, that even in Japan I have friends who don't know anything about it. Not all clients are Yakuza. Maybe half. The rest are laymen, carpenters, and what not. That was the tradition. I'd still recommend this book over any other book, Just because it has Horitoku, who is a legend in the hand-art-work of tebori. You could also check out a documentary made by Mario Barth, which is okay. The guy is kind of a douche. But its okay stuff. Otherwise, its very hard to get to see some of the quality artwork done by hand in Japan. There are very few tebori artists left, and those in America who do it don't count, because most of them are white, and don't descend from a traditional family from Japan who would never pass on their titles to non-japanese. Overall, I'd say get the book. The artwork in the beginning has amazing detail you could study over if you really into this type of tattooing. After understanding Tebori, and the culture, and spirituality in their artwork- you won't want to get any American machine tattoos. Go to Japan, find a horishi and beg them to do your work. Its worth the high cost, because their ink is purer, the work is more symbolic, and no where else in the world will you find such a lineage of tattooing. But be careful, you can't just get what you want. You have to align with their styles. This is a good book though. Not like the others, you get a chance to see at least one real tebori artist in my opinion in this art frame. So get it. Its worth the price.

This book is by far the best book I have ever looked at on the topic. It might be a little pricey but its so worth it. I have many books on Japanese tattooing and this one blows them all out of the water. Do not hesitate to buy. When I got this book in the mail I was so surprised, it is huge, heavy and beautiful. This is a must have for anyone interested in Japanese tattooing.
